NLCS Game 4: Cardinals 7 Dodgers 3 (14)

Clark’s two out grand slam in the 14th ties series at 2.

Ozzie Smith and Jack Clark celebrate thrilling win.

In one of the most exciting games in NLCS history, Jack Clark hit a 14th inning grand slam with 2 outs off of Rick Honeycutt.   After the first two Cardinals were retired, it appeared that the marathon would continue into the 15th.   Willie McGee tripled, and after Ozzie Smith was intentionally walked Tom Herr also walked setting the stage for Clarks’ dramatic homer.   With a 2-2 count, Clark launched a Honeycutt fastball into the left field stands to tie the series at 2.

John Tudor got the start and was magnificent but the Cardinals offense again had trouble getting untracked.  With Vince Coleman getting injured in a freak pre-game injury, the lineup was shuffled around with Tito Landrum getting the start at LF.

The Dodgers took a 1-0 lead in the 4th when Mike Marshall doubled, moved to third on Mike Scioscia’s sacrifice bunt, and scored on a Candy Maldonado sacrifice fly.

The Cardinals knotted things up in the 5th when Tudor opened the frame reaching second on an infield single and error.   Tudor moved to 3rd on a Willie McGee groundout, and Ozzie Smith drove him home with one of his four hits on the day.

The Cardinals had several chances to take the lead, but their running game was kept in check by a magnificent game by Scioscia who threw out 4 of 6 Cardinal baserunners.

In the 8th, Willie McGee opened the frame with a single but was erased on a steal attempt.  Ozzie Smith then doubled, stole 3rd, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tom Herr.  The McGee out would prove nearly fatal for the Redbirds.

Tudor retired the first two Dodger batters when Maldonado singled.  Don Bailor was called to pinch hit, and the Cardinals skipper countered with Todd Worrell.   Bailor was called back in favor of Greg Brock, who took a 2-1 fastball and dumped it into the right field stands giving the Dodgers a 3-2 lead.

With Dodger closer Tom Niedenfuer now pitching, the Cardinals needed a run to avoid playing in an elimination game tomorrow.  Andy Van Slyke got things started with a 1 out single and stole second and went to third on a throwing error by Scioscia.  Pinch hitter Darryl Porter was intentionally walked bringing up pinch hitter Steve Braun who delivered a game tying sacrifice fly to send the game into extra innings.

The Cardinal pen of Bill Campbell, Ricky Horton, and Jeff Lahti combined for 5 innings of shutout ball to setup Clark’s heroics.

With the series tied at 2, veteran Bob Forsch will face off against Fernando Valenzuela.
