Jun 1, 1985: Cards 5 Reds 4

Cards overcome early deficit, beat Reds.

Cincinnati jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first on back to back homers by Dave Parker and Alan Knicely, but the Cards stuck to their game and slowly chipped away at the lead.

The Cards opened the scoring in the 3rd when Vince Coleman reached on a two out single, stole second, and scampered home on a Willie McGee RBI hit.   In the 5th, Ozzie Smith led off the inning with a little power of his own, hitting a solo home run that just cleared the left center wall to cut to the gap to 3-2.   Tom Nieto followed with a single, and with one out Vince Coleman singled putting runners at the corners.  After Coleman stole his second base of the night, it was the NL batting leader Willie McGee coming up with a 2 run single to put the Cards out front to stay.  The Cards would add a run in the 7th when Coleman singled and McGee sent him home with a double.  The Reds homered in the 9th off of Neil Allen, but he was able to close the door after that to preserve the win.

Manager notes…

I didn’t think Kepshire was going to get out of the 1st, and Campbell was basically unavailable due to fatique.  Fortunately I got 5 out of Kepshire, and you notice all of the double switches I made trying to keep by bullpen guys in the game for multiple innings if possible.  With Campbell tired and Forsch pitching tomorrow, this is one of the very few times this year where I felt like I didn’t have free reign to do whatever I wanted with my pen.  The starters have been going so deep that my pen has been fresh as a daisy.   Tomorrow Lahti will be on the “DO NOT USE” list, so I’m looking for Forsch to give me 6.

I’m starting to see the chink in Neil Allen’s armor, luckily I had a two run lead.
